Central Milton Keynes Primary School:
This project comprises a 420 place primary school with 39 place nursery and community facilities, located in part of the new city centre development known as the Sustainable Residential Quarter (SRQ), where sustainable design is a key issue.
The design of the school incorporates a three storey facade of curtain walling towards East Square to promote the school as the heart of the community. Two single storey terraces wrap around the East Square and are covered by two large photovoltaic canopies, which provide both protection from the weather and solar shading.
The rear of the building is also clad in photovoltaics for both energy production and solar shading to the classrooms. Two roof mounted wind turbines were also proposed. The total amount of energy generated resulted in the scheme being carbon zero. The school’s external spaces will include a roof top playground, and an all weather pitch.
